Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal—known colloquially as the “Real Vinícola”—caused great confusion at its inception between two Royal Companies: the new one and the old Real Companhia dos Vinhos do Porto. Through popular vernacular and commercial slang, the Pombaline Real Companhia, founded in 1756, came to be called “Real Companhia Velha” and adopted that name as its brand. The century‑old Real Vinícola, established under the patronage of the Marquis of Pombal, eventually became a purely patrimonial entity and was acquired by the well‑known Fladgate Partnership, owner of major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
