Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal—commonly called the “Real Vinícola” by locals—caused a great deal of confusion at its inception, as it shared its name with the older Royal Company of Porto Wine. Over time, through popular usage and commercial slang, the Pombaline Real Companhia, established in 1756, became known as “Real Companhia Velha” and adopted that name as its brand. The century‑old Real Vinícola, created under the patronage of the Marquis of Pombal, eventually evolved into a purely patrimonial entity and was acquired by the well‑known Fladgate Partnership, owner of major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
