Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal, known colloquially as the “Real Vinícola,” sparked considerable confusion at its inception between the two Royal Companies—the new one and the old Royal Company of Port Wine. Over time, the Pombaline Royal Company, founded in 1756, began to be known as “Real Companhia Velha” and used that designation as a commercial brand. The century‑old Real Vinícola, created under the patronage of the Marquess of Pombal, eventually became a purely heritage society and was later acquired by the well‑known Fladgate Partnership, owner of major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
