The area that is now Chianti Rufina was defined in a 1716 decree that regulated four production zones in Tuscany, granting them the right to sell wines under the name of their origin: Pomino, Valdarno, Caremignano, and Chianti. In 1967 Chianti Rufina obtained DOC status, and in 1984 it became DOCG. Today it is the smallest zone in Chianti, covering 750 hectares. Given the area’s particular characteristics, an independent denomination was proposed in the 1970s, a goal that its producers still pursue today.
