Bacalhôa Vinhos de Portugal, founded in 1922 as João Pires & Filhos, has made a long journey, establishing itself as one of Portugal’s most innovative wine producers. The company began by producing wines from grapes grown in the Palmela region. Throughout the 1980s, Bacalhôa Vinhos de Portugal expanded, acquiring estates across the country and creating new paradigms for quality wine production. Regarded as the most beautiful estate from the first half of the 15th century still in existence in Portugal, Quinta da Bacalhôa is an old property of the Portuguese Royal House. Located in Azeitão, the Quinta and the famed Palácio da Bacalhôa together form an artistic monument of the greatest significance to the country. Today, Quinta da Bacalhôa belongs to Fundação Berardo, a foundation of the family bearing the same name, whose patriarch is Comendador José Berardo. On June 23, 1910 it was classified as a National Monument. In the area surrounding Quinta da Bacalhôa, visitors find picturesque villages, cellars, and one of Portugal’s most beautiful and imposing landscapes – the Arrábida Natural Park. (illustrative image)
