The Alvarinho grape remained in the Melgaço region for years, and traditionally vines were planted along field edges, with cereals occupying the center of the plots. In 1974, João António Cerdeira and his parents, António Esteves Ferreira and Maria Cerdeira, decided to break this tradition and planted the first continuous Alvarinho vineyard in Melgaço, which was christened “Soalheiro” because of its sun exposure. João António’s pioneering spirit marked the family’s history, which has since been tied to Alvarinho production in Melgaço. Today, it’s the third generation that carries on the legacy, extending the vision to organic production. (illustrative image only)
