Quinta de Santo António is situated in Fornos de Maceira Dão, in the municipality of Mangualde, and covers a total area of about 30 hectares, of which roughly 11 hectares are vineyards—mostly old vines—featuring the region’s principal grape varieties: Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro, Tinta Roriz, Jaen, Rufete, and Encruzado. The house is one of the oldest estates in the municipality. The original building dates back to the 16th century, with a simple façade, lightly decorated windows, and an original corner window in Manueline style. Later, a Baroque chapel dedicated to Saint Anthony, beloved of the riverbanks and protector of livestock, was added; its construction began in 1736 and it survived the 1755 earthquake. In the 20th century, a third wing was built, including the majestic clock tower. Vineyards have always played a crucial role in the estate’s history and the region’s. Even in the first charter of Count D. Henrique in 1102, grape production was mentioned and taxed. The current owner acquired the estate in 1999 with the aim of producing high‑quality estate wines that express the unique character of the Dão. (illustrative image)
