Tawny wines are red wines made from the same grapes as Ruby wines, but they only spend two to three years in casks before moving to barrels. This extra time allows the wine greater contact with wood and air, so Tawny wines “breathe” more, oxidise, and age quickly. Because of the high oxidation, they lose the initial red hue, adopting lighter amber tones and flavours of dried fruit such as walnuts or almonds. As they mature, Tawny wines gain even greater aromatic complexity, enriching their bouquet. Coimbra de Mattos, a family devoted to viticulture in the Douro, exemplifies how a commitment to heritage and the family business can endure. The bottling year may not match the image shown.
