This Marlborough Chardonnay from Villa Maria is a delightful reminder that great wine doesn’t *always* need to be chilled. Hand-picked during a particularly challenging March/April harvest, it boasts intensely concentrated fruit – a brilliant match with some crispy fried Pan Hapuku and a lemon-butter marinade, if you’re feeling adventurous. The use of traditional yeasts and ageing in 30% new oak adds a welcome layer of complexity, though thankfully doesn’t overshadow the vibrant fruit. It’s a wine that deserves something rich to accompany it, perhaps delicate scallops with a melon salad – a perfect pairing, really.
