Description

The wine region was demarcated in 1908, making it the second oldest demarcated region in the country. It is situated in a dune area on the coast of the municipality of Sintra, between the Serra and the Atlantic Ocean, stretching from Cabo da Roca to Magoito. The connection between Colares and wine has been lost to time, but it is known that wine was already being produced in this area during the Roman occupation. Later, in 1230, King D. Afonso III granted lands to nobles on the condition that they develop viticulture. The Colares region became famous in the late nineteenth century, specifically in 1865, when its greatest threat to world viticulture, phylloxera, descended upon it. This tiny insect, from the Americas, began arriving alive in Europe when travel times were shortened by the introduction of steam engines on ships. Interestingly, the vineyards of Colares were the only ones to survive phylloxera, thanks to their deep roots—sometimes reaching eight metres—which prevented the pathogen from spreading as it did in other soils. Across Europe, except in this region, American rootstocks (resistant to the insect) grafted onto European varieties began to be used.
