The Azores Wine Company was founded on 3 April 2014 by partners António Maçanita, Filipe Rocha and Insula Vinus, Lda. Their joint effort, friendship and shared vision to restore the Azores – and in particular Pico Island – to the renown of yesteryear challenge them to create a new project. Thus the Azores Wine Company emerged, already producing about 10,000 bottles in 2014. The single‑varietal whites Arinto dos Açores and Verdelho O Original from the Rare Grapes Collection make up more than half of production. But the red and rosé wines of the Volcanic Series also astonish. This history also includes the first sparkling wine of the Azores, produced in 2011 in the Terrantez project of Pico, and by 2014 the first sparkling wine from Pico made from the Arinto dos Açores grape. Finally, work is already underway in the fortified wine sector, in pursuit of the famous Pico wines that traversed the world more than 400 years ago.
