Founded in 2014 by Filipe Rocha, António Maçanita and Paulo Machado, Azores Wine Company has put Pico Island back on the world wine map. Working with old-vine plantings inside the UNESCO-listed lava-stone currais and pioneering varietal bottlings of the rare Verdelho, Arinto dos Açores and Terrantez do Pico, the project has produced some of Portugal's most singular whites. The modern visitor centre in Madalena combines architectural drama with tastings of bottlings that capture Pico's saline, smoky-mineral, electric character.
