Azores Wine Company was founded on 3 April 2014 by António Maçanita, Filipe Rocha and Insula Vinus, Lda. The joint effort, friendship and shared vision to restore the fame once enjoyed by the Azores—and especially Pico Island—led them to launch this new venture. By 2014 the company was already producing about 10,000 bottles. The single‑varietal whites Arinto dos Açores and Verdelho O Original from the Rare Grapes Collection account for more than half of the output, while the red and rosé wines of the Volcanic Series also deliver surprises. The company’s heritage includes the first sparkling wine of the Azores, created in 2011 as part of Pico’s Terrantez project, and by 2014 the first Pico sparkling wine made from Arinto dos Açores. Work is also underway on fortified wines, chasing the legendary Pico vintages that once travelled the world more than 400 years ago.
