Dr. Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr means "The Sundial of Wehlen." This is one of the greatest vineyards in the Middle Mosel. Steep and rocky, it produces some of the most elegant and refined white wines in the world. Planted in blue slate soil, the most typical slate soil of the Middle Mosel, the vineyard is rich in potassium, which provides vital nutrients to the vines and gives the wines a pronounced mineral edge that accentuates Riesling's naturally high acidity. In addition to the heat-retaining blue slate, the vineyard lies on incredibly steep slopes in a favourable position near the river, with excellent drainage. The grapes for this wine grow in the "Laychen," the former name of a parcel of original, ungrafted vines at least 130 years old. When young, these wines are charmingly delicate and playful, with floral, citrus, and vineyard peach aromas. The GGR, however, rewards extended ageing with greater harmony and a deeper expression of this extraordinary vineyard.
