Barão de Vilar, Vinhos S.A. was founded in January 1996 from a stock of wines acquired by Fernando Luiz Van Zeller and subsequently passed on to his two sons, Fernando and Álvaro. Its corporate name revives a noble title granted by Queen Maria II of Portugal to Cristiano Nicolau Kopke, the 1st Baron of Vilar, in 1836—a title that, through descent, remains directly in the family’s possession. Before the establishment of Barão de Vilar, the Van Zeller family owned Quinta do Noval, one of the most renowned estates in the Port wine sector, from which the legendary “Vintage 1931 Nacional” originates, hailed as one of the two best wines in the world of the twentieth century by *Wine Spectator*. Today, Barão de Vilar is known as Van Zeller Wine Collection, a company that embodies a collection of values, ideas, stories and wines. (illustrative image)
