Picowines

The historic cooperative of Pico Island, Picowines (founded in 1949 as Cooperativa Vitivinícola da Ilha do Pico) is the institutional heart of Azorean wine production. The Madalena visitor centre offers an excellent introduction to the island's wine landscape — including the iconic stone-walled currais — with tastings of the cooperative's range, from the famous fortified Lajido (a dessert wine made in tiny quantities from sun-dried grapes) to fresh Verdelho-led whites. A genuinely educational stop for first-time visitors to Pico.
