Mosel

The Mosel in western Germany produces some of the world's most ethereal and ageworthy white wines from Riesling planted on impossibly steep blue-slate slopes above the meandering river. The slate retains heat and reflects sunlight onto the vines in the cool continental climate, producing wines that combine ripe stone-fruit aromatics with searing, slate-driven acidity and modest alcohol — Mosel Kabinetts often weigh in below 9% ABV. The Prädikat system runs Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese, Beerenauslese, Trockenbeerenauslese, climbing the ripeness ladder. Producers like J.J. Prüm and Egon Müller are global benchmarks.
