Founded in 1889, the Royal Wine Company of Northern Portugal—known locally as the “Real Vinícola”—initially caused confusion between the new and the old Royal Wine Companies of Porto. Over time, through popular usage and commercial branding, the Pombaline Royal Company, established in 1756, came to be called the “Old Royal Company” and adopted that name as its trade mark. The century‑old Royal Winery, founded under the patronage of the Marquis of Pombal, eventually became a purely patrimonial entity and was acquired by the well‑known Fladgate Partnership, which owns major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
