It is said that the main mentor of Madeira wine was Prince Don Henrique, who encouraged the cultivation of the Malvasia Cândida grape, originally from Candia in Crete, on the island of Madeira—an initiative that proved to be a success. By the mid‑fifteenth century Madeira wine was already being exported, with routes that reached Europe, where it was regarded as a refined delicacy, so much so that it was even used as a perfume for the ladies’ handkerchiefs at court. The prestige of this nectar was such that it is frequently referenced in history, the arts, and the legends of several nations. The bottling year may not match the image shown.
