In the national wine panorama, no producer is more consensual than Niepoort. Any serious wine lover has probably savoured one or more of the precious offerings that Niepoort has produced year after year. It would almost be fair to say that a Niepoort wine is bottled art. The house’s long history began in 1842 with the arrival of the first Van Der Niepoort in Portugal. Initially a port wine trader, he soon turned his business into a prosperous enterprise that would greatly ease the work of future generations. Even while remaining steadfast amid the ups and downs of the port wine sector, Niepoort has always stayed at the forefront over its centuries of existence. In the fifth generation came the man who would change everything in this age‑old house and in the Dão wine scene: Dirk Niepoort, an unmistakable figure in the wine world, renowned as one of the most important personalities working for Portuguese wine. Dirk Niepoort enjoys a unique popularity, and his name is synonymous with dynamism, experimentation, and above all a huge spirit of sacrifice for wine, which remains his greatest passion. He has collaborated with dozens of producers, helping them improve their wines and understand their vineyards. He sparked a revolution in the 1990s with the launch of his first Robustus, still a mythic wine in the Douro. His house has hosted numerous Dão winemakers, who also left their mark on the quality of table wines in the Douro. In 2006 he launched Niepoort Projects, where he puts his experiences to work on unusual varieties in the Douro such as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Riesling, starts importing some of the best wines from Burgundy or the Rhône, and distributes wines he loves from various friend winemakers. In 2012 he began a project in the Bairrada by acquiring Quinta de Baixo, an old dream, even if he had not helped the Gonçalves Faria, Quinta de Saima, or Dores Simões become well known. Many other projects, in almost all Portuguese wine regions and some abroad, have been shaped by Dirk Niepoort. As one once said, Portugal needed another four or five Dirks, or we would have no wine to sell today. Niepoort’s Garrafeira wines are very special, as this is a category that only Niepoort produces today. They are fine and elegant, almost feminine, maturing in demijons of 7 to 12 litres for about 30 years before bottling. Drinking a Niepoort Garrafeira is tasting the purest expression of a Port wine.
