Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal—colloquially known by the locals as the “Real Vinícola”—created a great confusion between the two Royal Companies: the new one and the old Royal Company of Port Wine. It is through the people’s voice and commercial slang that the 1756‑founded Pombalina Real Companhia began to be called “Real Companhia Velha” and adopted that name as its trade brand. Over the years this centenary estate, established under the patronage of the Marquês de Pombal, became merely a patrimonial society before being acquired by the well‑known Fladgate Partnership, owner of major Port brands such as Taylor’s.
