Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal—known among locals as the “Real Vinícola”—caused a great confusion at its inception between two Royal Companies: the new one and the old Royal Wine Company of Porto. Through the voice of the people and commercial slang, the Pombaline Real Companhia, founded in 1756, began to be called “Real Companhia Velha” and to use that name as a commercial brand. The centenary Real Vinícola, created under the auspices of the Marquis of Pombal, eventually became a purely patrimonial company and was acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, owner of major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
