Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal, known colloquially as the "Real Vinícola," caused considerable confusion upon its creation between the two Royal Companies: the new one and the Old Royal Company of Port Wines. It was through the voice of the people and commercial slang that the Pombaline Real Companhia, founded in 1756, came to be known as the "Real Companhia Velha" and adopted this designation as a trademark. The centenary Real Vinícola, created under the auspices of the Marquis of Pombal, became over the years a purely patrimonial society and was acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, owner of major Port wine brands such as Taylor's.
