The wine region was demarcated in 1908, making it the country’s second‑oldest demarcated area. Located in a dune zone on the coast of Sintra, between the Serra and the Atlantic Ocean, it stretches from Cabo da Roca to Magoito. Colares’ link to wine is ancient; it is known that Romans produced wine here, and in 1230 King D. Afonso III granted lands to nobles on the condition that they cultivate vines. The area gained notoriety in the late 19th century, particularly in 1865, when the global viticultural threat of phylloxera struck. This tiny insect from the Americas arrived alive in Europe as steamship travel shortened voyages. Remarkably, Colares’ vines were the only ones to survive phylloxera, thanks to roots that sometimes reach 8 metres deep, preventing the microbe’s spread as it did in other soils. Across Europe—except in this region—American rootstocks resistant to the insect were grafted onto European varieties. (Illustrative image only)
