The Alvarinho grape variety has remained in the Melgaço region for many years, and traditionally vines were planted along the edges of the fields, with cereals taking up the centre of the plots. In 1974, João António Cerdeira and his parents, António Esteves Ferreira and Maria Cerdeira, decided to break this tradition and planted the first continuous plot of Alvarinho vines in Melgaço, which was named “Soalheiro” because of its sunny exposure. João António’s pioneering spirit marked the family’s history, which has since been linked to Alvarinho production in Melgaço. Today, the third generation continues the legacy, extending the vision to organic production. (Illustrative image only.)
