Casa Ferreirinha The time revealed the wine, the altitude defined the style. The Casa Ferreirinha Reserva Especial 2017 arrives now on the market after 18 months of maturation in oak and nearly seven years of bottle ageing. It is primarily made from vines at Quinta da Leda and high-altitude plots in the Meda region, in a distinctly hot and dry growing season with temperatures about 5 °C above normal. In 2017, the rapid ripening demanded particular attention in both vineyard and cellar, maintaining the usual rigor of Casa Ferreirinha. “2017 was a very hot year in the Upper Douro — and that is precisely why this wine surprised us from the start. It achieved a balance that the year did not offer: altitude and meticulous work in the vineyard and cellar preserved freshness in an extremely challenging context. Still, the year left a clear mark: a record of great delicacy and elegance. In tasting, it clearly belongs to the Barca‑Velha universe; yet its architecture and expression of the vintage point to Reserva Especial,” says winemaker Luís de Sottomayor. Lourenço Charters, working closely with Luís de Sottomayor and deepening the same enological approach, adds: “The technique guides, but experience decides. There comes a point where the wine stops being a process and becomes intuition.” The batch, composed of Touriga Franca (48 %), Touriga Nacional (35 %), Sousão (7 %), Tinto Cão (5 %) and Tinta Roriz (5 %), spent about 18 months in French oak barrels. At Casa Ferreirinha, tasting dictates the time. Before release, the wine evolved in the bottle under the watchful eye of the enology team until it began to reveal its true form, already with harmony and definition. That moment has now arrived. From here, it will continue to evolve positively in the bottle: it should reach its apex in 15 to 20 years and maintain maximum quality for decades. More than a new edition, the Reserva Especial 2017 reaffirms Casa Ferreirinha’s place among the world’s great wines and reinforces the Douro as a global benchmark.
