Jean‑François de Pontet was appointed at the court of Versailles, where he served as Grande Équitateur (Master of the Horse) for Louis XV. After returning to Guyenne, he became Governor of the Médoc. In 1705 he acquired several hectares north of the village of Pauillac, planted vines there, and gave the land his own name to give his estate a distinct identity. A century later, Château Pontet‑Canet was thriving and became one of the few selected to join the famous 1855 classification, which had been ordered by Napoleon III. Today the estate is owned by the descendants of Guy Tesseron: Alfred and his nieces Mélanie and Philippine. Together they have envisioned a new era for Château Pontet‑Canet, where viticulture embraces organic and biodynamic methods, and the wines have progressed to the point that they are now among the most prestigious in Bordeaux.
