Jean‑François de Pontet was appointed at the court of Versailles, where he served as Grand Equerry (Master of the Horse) to Louis XV. After returning to Guyenne, he became Governor of Médoc. In 1705 he acquired several hectares of land north of the village of Pauillac, planted vines there, and gave the estate his own name to create a recognized identity. A century later, Château Pontet‑Canet was thriving and became one of the few wineries selected for the famous 1855 classification, ordered by Napoleon III. Today the property is owned by Guy Tesseron’s descendants: Alfred and his aunts Mélanie and Philippine. Together they envisioned a new era for Château Pontet‑Canet, where viticulture embraces organic and biodynamic methods, and the wines have progressed to become among the most prestigious in Bordeaux.
