Jean‑François de Pontet was appointed to the Court of Versailles, where he served as Grande Équitateur (Master of the Horse) for Louis XV. Upon his return to Guyenne, he became Governor of the Médoc. In 1705 he purchased a few hectares north of Pauillac, planted vines, and gave the land his own name to forge a recognised identity for his estate. A century later, Château Pontet‑Canet was flourishing and was selected to join the famed 1855 classification, decreed by Napoleon III. Today the estate is owned by the descendants of Guy Tesseron—Alfred and his aunts Mélanie and Philippine—who envisioned a new era for Château Pontet‑Canet, embracing organic and biodynamic viticulture; the wines have advanced to become among Bordeaux’s most prestigious.
