The noble Bosq family began cultivating grapes in 1365. In the 18th century, the estate was purchased by the Scotsman George Smith, who gave the property its current name. He also built the mansion and exported his wine, now famous, to England aboard his own ships. In 1842, Mr. Duffour-Dubergier, mayor of Bordeaux and an enthusiastic winegrower, inherited Château Smith Haut Lafitte from his mother and raised the wine to a great level. Impressed by the excellent quality of Smith Haut Lafitte, the firm Louis Eschenauer distributed the wine worldwide from the early 20th century, and in 1958 it decided to buy the property. Before the Eschenauer era came to an end, a large sum of money was invested in the estate, especially in the construction of an excellent underground cellar capable of storing more than 1,000 barrels.
