Colares wines are an unparalleled paradox in Portugal. From vines that have escaped phylloxera thanks to their sandy soils, to the distinct quality these wines deliver. Their unique character stems from the grape varieties, the soil and a temperate, humid summer climate, and the fact that 80 % of the vineyard is planted on sandy ground, honouring traditional viticulture. Colares reaches its peak only after several years, with a minimum ageing period of 18 months, which explains its very limited commercial availability. (illustrative image only)
