The red wine Combro is made from Vinha Velha grapes, reflecting the authenticity and diversity of the region. Fermentation takes place in granite vats with foot‑treading, using indigenous yeasts, followed by maturation in temperature‑controlled tanks to preserve the purity of aromas and flavours. The 18‑month ageing in French oak barrels gives it elegance and complexity, resulting in a structured wine with silky tannins, notes of ripe fruit, spices and a long, enveloping finish. With over 160 years of tradition in the Douro, the Caçém family has wine in its DNA. For four generations they produced Port in the historic A.A. Cálem & Filho, Lda., until its sale in 1997. Today the passion lives on through José Maria Cálem and his son Duarte, who continue the family legacy in the fifth and sixth generation. The vines, cellar and mother house are located in Vilarinho de Cotas, Alijó, a few kilometres from Pinhão, in the heart of the Douro. The terroir is characterised by old vines planted on small hills, narrow terraces supported by slate walls, where dozens of blended grape varieties grow, as dictated by the tradition of the old vintners. Here viticulture is fully manual, preserving the authenticity and diversity that make the Douro one of the most fascinating wine regions in the world. (illustrative image only)
