Founded in 1920 by Deonilde Freitas, continued by Germana Freitas and later by Ermelinda Freitas, the family has always paid special attention to wine. From the first generation, the house has focused on the quality of the vines and the wines, which were initially produced and sold in bulk without a label. It was under the current management of Leonor Freitas that a major change occurred: in 1997 a new cycle began for this centuries‑old family business, with the first wine produced and bottled under the name Casa Ermelinda Freitas.
