The Frei João Clássico white presents a pale straw-yellow hue and a rich, complex aroma, featuring fruity, vegetal, mineral, spicy notes and subtle barrel nuances. On the palate it is very fresh, dry and structured, with an elegant profile that makes it an excellent candidate for bottle ageing. Founded in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa, the Caves São João are a family business that originally focused on marketing fine Douro wines and liqueurs. Today, it is the oldest still‑operating family winery in the municipality of Anadia. In the 1930s, following the prohibition on producing Porto wines outside Vila Nova de Gaia, the company began trading table wines from Bairrada. At the end of the 1950s, one of Bairrada’s most celebrated wine brands, “Frei João,” was born, and a little later the “Porta dos Cavaleiros” brand emerged from the demarcated Dão region.
