Thirty herbs and spices are used in the distillation of this famous Italian liqueur, whose predominant flavour comes from anise and fresh herbs. Liquore Galliano L'Autentico, better known simply as Galliano, was created in 1896 by Italian distiller Arturo Vaccari of Livorno, Tuscany, and named in honour of Giuseppe Galliano, an Italian hero of the First Italo‑Ethiopian War. Galliano contains a wide range of natural ingredients: vanilla, star anise, Mediterranean anise, ginger, citrus fruits, juniper, and lavender. The neutral spirit is infused with the herbs, with vanilla added only at the final stage. The liqueur’s flavour blends the sweetness of vanilla and anise with the bitterness of citrus and herbs. It is enjoyed both as a digestif and as a cocktail ingredient. Galliano is also noted for its bottle, which resembles a classic Roman column. The brand is now owned by Dutch distiller Lucas Bols.
