Grand Bateau O Grand Bateau is born on a unique terroir: the heart of the vineyard sits on two elevations of deep gravelly Garonnaise slopes typical of the Médoc, which retain daytime heat and ensure ideal drainage. The proximity to the Gironde estuary regulates the climate and protects the vines, creating exceptional conditions for the perfect maturation of the grapes. The average age of the vines is about 30 years, and the planting density ranges from 8,300 to 10,000 vines per hectare. The varietal composition respects Bordeaux tradition: 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot. The harvest is hand‑picked, and each plot is carefully managed, honoring the identity of each terroir. Environmental stewardship sits at the core of the production philosophy, backed by ISO 14001 certification and sustainable farming practices. To keep pace with the evolution of viticulture and enology, Château Beychevelle has recently built a new cellar—known in Bordeaux by the French term “chai”—that blends tradition and innovation. The building, with modern shapes and expansive glazed surfaces, draws inspiration from nautical themes and the legend of the Duke of Épernon, whose maritime ties gave rise to the name “Beychevelle” (baisse voile, or “lower the sails”). This new infrastructure allows winemaking by plots, with gentle extractions and very precise temperature control, enhancing the full complexity and depth of the wines.
