The Artur de Barros e Sousa Lda. company was founded in 1890 by Pedro José Lomelino and has remained in family hands ever since, with Artur and Edmundo Olim, fourth‑generation descendants, standing out. It was the smallest Madeira wine producer on the island, annually producing between 8,000 and 10,000 litres, with a total storage capacity of 85,000 to 90,000 litres. The changes made at this estate over the years were very few, making it a living museum. Artur de Barros e Sousa (ABSL) Madeira wines are delicate and almost fragile in structure, gaining a lot with age. In their youth they may seem simpler, but ageing increases their complexity and depth. In 2014, Artur de Barros e Sousa was acquired by the neighbouring Pereira D’Oliveira, the current owner of the company. The bottling year may not correspond to the image shown (illustrative image).
