The story of Madeira wine begins shortly after the island that gives it its name was discovered, with records of the first productions and exports appearing 25 years later. On Madeira, vineyards are planted in small earth terracing known as “poios,” supported by earth walls on steep mountain slopes that are often difficult to reach. The island’s unique soil and climate, together with the production process and the grape varieties cultivated, have contributed to Madeira wine’s unparalleled distinction over time. In addition, 30 grape varieties are used in the production of this fortified wine, the most esteemed being Sercial, Boal, Verdelho and Malvasia. The bottling year may not match the image shown.
