The history of Madeira wine began shortly after the island that gives it its name was discovered, with records of the first productions and exports dating back 25 years. On Madeira, vines are cultivated in small earth plots called “poios,” supported by earthen walls on the often inaccessible mountain slopes. The island’s unique soil and climate, along with its production methods and grape varieties, have helped forge Madeira wine’s unparalleled distinction over time. Beyond these factors, 30 grape varieties are used in the production of this liqueur wine, with the most noble being Sercial, Boal, Verdelho, and Malvasia.
