According to tradition, the Madeira wine owed its early development chiefly to Prince Henry the Navigator, who encouraged the cultivation of the Malvasia Candida grape variety, originating from Candia in Crete, on the island of Madeira, a venture that proved highly successful. By the mid-15th century, Madeira wine was already being exported, with trade routes reaching across Europe, where it was regarded as the most refined of wines and was even used to scent the handkerchiefs of ladies at court. The prestige of this nectar was such that references to it are frequent throughout history, in the arts, and in the legends of several nations.
