The story of Madeira wine begins shortly after the island that gives it its name was discovered, with records of the first productions and exports dating back 25 years after its discovery. On the island of Madeira, vines are grown in small plots of earth called “poios,” supported by earthen walls on the mountain slopes, which are often difficult to access. The island’s unique soil and climate, as well as its production process and the grape varieties cultivated, have contributed to the unparalleled distinction of Madeira wine over time. In addition to these factors, there are 30 grape varieties used to produce this fortified wine, with the most prized being Sercial, Boal, Verdelho, and Malvasia.
