The story of Madeira wine begins shortly after the island from which it takes its name was discovered, with records of the first productions and exports, 25 years after its discovery. On Madeira Island, vines are grown in small plots of land known as “poios,” supported by earth walls on the mountain slopes, which are often difficult to reach. The island’s unique soil and climate, as well as its production process and the grape varieties cultivated, have contributed to the unparalleled distinction of Madeira wine over time. In addition to these factors, there are 30 varieties used for producing this fortified wine, with the most noble being Sercial, Boal, Verdelho, and Malvasia.
