The Manz family moved to the quiet village of Cheleiros, in the west of Portugal, in 2004 and quickly fell in love with the people and the place. The region’s viticultural past, with its pastoral landscape and lost customs, soon captivated André Manz, who, with the help and advice of locals, decided to experiment with producing wine for personal consumption. After identifying the grape varieties that would be planted in an abandoned vineyard tucked within an orchard, he discovered that one of the varieties was a grape practically extinct in Portugal – the Jampal. Few producers currently bet on this variety, due to its low profitability, but André Manz did not seek to follow anyone’s footsteps, except his own. Today, the expansion of his business already covers three wine regions – Douro, Lisbon, and the Setúbal Peninsula – and 25 countries. (image merely illustrative)
