The origin of the winery Marqués de Murrieta is also the starting point of the Rioja region's existence. Don Luciano Murrieta, a man of visionary ideas and devoted to his greatest passion for wine, applied the techniques he had learned in Bordeaux, producing the first Rioja wine in 1852 with the aim of making it endure over time. Years later, in 1870, he moved his business to Castillo Ygay, and it is here that the story of this remarkable, historic, and internationally renowned producer begins. The headquarters of Marqués de Murrieta was declared a museum in 2019. The property is surrounded by 300 hectares of fertile land with ideal conditions for vine cultivation, and in 2011 it embraced a project to renovate its facilities, incorporating the latest oenological technology while preserving the values that make them unique.
