At the beginning of the 19th century, Thomas Reynolds moved to the Alentejo region with the aim of working in the cork business. Three generations later, his grandson John Reynolds acquired the Herdade do Mouchão estate for wine production. In 1901, the property's first vineyards were planted and, in 1929, construction began on a traditional winery and a distillery, which still produces the Aguardente Mouchão brandy today. Today, Herdade do Mouchão continues to be managed and worked by descendants of the original family, and the entire winemaking process remains virtually unchanged, preserving the traditional hand harvest and the fermentation of grapes in stone lagares, using foot treading. It is these techniques, along with the entire success story of Herdade do Mouchão, that keep this winemaking company so close to what wines once were in the past.
