In the early 19th century, Thomas Reynolds moved to the Alentejo region to pursue the cork business. Three generations later, his grandson John Reynolds bought the Herdade do Mouchão for wine production. The first vines were planted in 1901, and in 1929 construction began on a traditional cellar and a distillery that still produces Mouchão brandy today. Today the Herdade do Mouchão remains run by descendants of the original family, and the winemaking process is virtually unchanged: hand‑harvested grapes are fermented in stone vats and pressed on foot. These time‑honoured techniques and the estate’s long success story keep the wines close to what they once were.
