Niepoort’s 30‑year‑old shows a deep chocolate hue with a greenish‑brown rim, a hallmark of older Tawnies. The nose is lively, offering concentrated notes of coffee and licorice that linger on the palate, finishing silky and long. In the national wine scene there is no more consensual producer than Niepoort, whose long history began in 1842 when the first Van Der Niepoort arrived in Portugal. Starting in the Port wine market as a merchant, he quickly established a business that proved prosperous and enduring. Thus, in the fifth generation, Dirk Niepoort was born—a formidable producer in the wine world, recognised as one of the most influential figures who has worked and continues to work for Portuguese wine. He has collaborated with dozens of producers, helping them improve their wines and understand their vines, while also building his legacy with those who continually create irreverent wines.
