1968 was a good year for the vines. However, the abundant rainfall that fell even before the harvest set the tone for the year, prompting many wineries to declare early harvests—including Niepoort. It’s perhaps here that the secret lies in the experience of the small, old oak staves, which impart their effect, and the wine gains concentration over many years of slow oxidative ageing in the cool cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia.
