Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal – known colloquially as the “Real Vinícola” – initially caused great confusion between the two Royal Companies: the new and the old Royal Company of Porto Wines. It was through the voice of the people and commercial slang that the Pombaline Real Company, founded in 1756, came to be known as the “Old Royal Company” and adopted that name as its trade mark. The century‑old Real Vinícola, established under the auspices of the Marquis of Pombal, eventually became a purely patrimonial entity and was acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, which owns major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
