Founded in 1889, the Royal Wine Company of North Portugal – colloquially called the “Royal Vinícola” – sparked a huge confusion at its inception between the two Royal Companies: the new and the old Royal Company of Port Wines. Through the people’s voice and commercial slang, the Pombaline Royal Company, founded in 1756, came to be known as the “Old Royal Company” and began using that name as a brand. The century‑old Royal Vinícola, created under the patronage of the Marquis of Pombal, gradually turned into a purely patrimonial entity and was later acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, owner of major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
