Founded in 1889, the Royal Wine Company of Northern Portugal—known colloquially as the “Royal Vinícola”—caused a great confusion at its inception between the two Royal Companies: the new one and the old Royal Company of Port Wine. And it is through the voice of the people and commercial slang that the 1756‑founded Pombaline Royal Company began to be known as “Old Royal Company” and used that designation as a trade name. The centennial Royal Vinícola, created under the auspices of the Marquis of Pombal, became over the years a purely patrimonial entity, later acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, owner of major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
